what a view coming over the dunes

Beach Driving 2

Next stop was Port Lincoln on the tip of the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. Port Lincoln is famous for its bluefin tuna and home to a substantial fisheries industry. The trainer for three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva comes from Port Lincoln and there is a bronze statue of Makybe on the park on the town's foreshore. Port Lincolner's must be good punters because apparently there are more millionaires per capita in Port Lincoln's postcode than any other postcode in Australia.

Lauren has a mate called Steve who has lived in Port Lincoln for 18 years so he has a fair bit of local knowledge. Steve took us to a surf-fishing spot. You could see the black schools of salmon from the beach - it must have been hundreds of fish all swimming tightly together in the schools. You could also see them surfing through the waves, it was an incredible sight. Although we stopped for an hour we didn't catch anything other than a few snags on the rocks, the salmon just weren't biting unfortunately.

There is about 20km of 4wd track that goes along the coastline, it is very scenic and an interesting drive. The track is a variety of rocky track and deep sand so it is quite an interesting drive. The trick with the sand driving was to keep the speed up, which the Pajero's new donk was more than capable of doing. The video gives an idea of what the terrain was like on the track to the beach. The Paj had no trouble getting through, but Steve had to get the long-handled shovel out for the Land Cruiser a couple of times.

Sadly a few days after we left there were bushfires around the town and some homes were lost. It was only a couple of years ago that several lives were lost in bushfires around the town.
