sand dunes leading onto gunyah beach

Beach Driving

First leg of our trip was to Coffin Bay which is just west of Port Lincoln in South Australia.

Coffin Bay is well known for its fishing spots and its world class oysters. Gunyah Beach is a great surf fishing beach. There is a 4WD only track to get to the beach. When we ventured down there there was only one other car on the beach with a couple of blokes fishing. Other than that we had the beach to ourselves. That's one of the great things of having a 4WD is the remote places you can get to.

Gunyah Beach is in a national park and there are fragile bird colonies on the beach so you are limited to driving 3km either side of the entrance to the beach. That was enough for Lauren anyway as she isn't as accustomed to 4WDing like me and didn't have my confidence - we did stop a couple of times but we hadn't even had to let our tyres down.

The town of Coffin Bay is quite small and quaint. It has oyster beds just in front of the main strip, and there's pelicans that come up to the beach.
