The guys at work organised a 4x4 day trip to Wedge island in WA, its not too far from perth, i'm a reletive new 4x4er so with others to help out i felt confident and happy to tag along.
the other guys travelled quite fast, but my old kombi was happy to keep up, plenty of knocking and bumping as we travelled over rocks n stuff, then we met the first of the mud holes, one by one we ploughed our respective 4x4's thru the deep pit, one guy got stuck on his diff bulb, but reversed out, a couple more mud holes, the vehicles were getting dirtier, and drivers were getting more confident (inc myself) then as we rounded a corner a huge pond thing lay before us, it looked deep, i looked wide! the boss man took a short run the front wheels dropped into the watery mud and a bow wave pushed forward like a mini tsunami, then nothing, the motor was silent. he'd hydroliced his diesel motor, we managed to get another 4x4 round the side, one of the brave guys went in and hitched a rope, the shiney 4x4 was dragged out, and the big strip began. i figured with my motor being in the rear i wouldnt have the same problem, sure enough Big Red dropped into the hole the water gushed in front, and the kombi drove thru the hole, the next hole was bigger and deeper, while the other guys were stripping the bosses car, i thought i'd have a go, a little faster this time, the bow wave washed up the windscreen, i couldnt see a thing, mud everywhere, washers and wipers on full speed, and i could hear cheering and shouting, the van slowed the wheels were all spinning, and then the old girl just crawled out of the pit, water pouring out of everywhere, including the cab. i was (and still am) very pleased with the performance of my 2.1 vw syncro caravelle!  kombi kisses to every one!
