We have made 3 Europe-Asia motoring trips (
Please see our map)
(1) UK to India (1968) via Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan over 3 months and 20,000km. We were enthralled by the ruins of ancient civilizations, and wild Afghanistan.
(2) Malaysia to UK (1999) via Thailand, Laos, China and Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia, Russia, Belarus and Europe over 5 months and 29,000km. Highlights included driving 5,280m (17,300 ft) passes into and out of Tibet and parking in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, and camping near Lake Baikal and in the forests of Siberia
(3) Vladivostok to UK (2007) with many detours in Far eastern Siberia and Mongolia and driving 70 degrees north to Murmansk - 29,000km over 5 months. Highlights included driving the infamous "Road of Bones" towards Magadan in eastern Siberia (until defeated by the weather!) and exploring the more remote parts of SW Mongolia.
This third journey in our 1986 Mitbubishi Pajero and has been featured in numerous Mitsubishi advertisements.
The two of us made all three journeys without backup or in convoy.
The full story of our first two journeys appears in our book '
Don't kiss me - It's very terrible' (299 pages, 30 full-page colour photos).
