Dubbo – A fishing Mecca!

The inland NSW town of Dubbo probably isn’t at the top of any fisherman’s ‘must visit’ list, but we got talked into turning up by a fan of Hook, Line and Sinker who made contact with us and promised us big fish and lots of them!

Shane Glynn is a top bloke who met us early one Tuesday morning on the side of the road with boat in tow. The day before we’d picked up our Triton in the Big Smoke and made the five or so hour trip to Dubbo.

We followed Shane for about 40 minutes, up to an impoundment so big we were told it has more water in it than Sydney Harbour. Lake Burrendong glistened in the very early morning light (a little too early for our liking!) so we shot a few introductions, loaded up the boats and off we went to Shane’s secret spot. Which was over the other side of the dam, and given all the gear and extra weight in Shane’s boat, the 10 minute journey took more like 45 minutes.

The fishing was pretty slow that day, using live yabbies we did manage a magnificent big Yellowbelly (well Shane did anyway…) which got our Dubbo trip well under way!

We ate out in Dubbo that night, dreaming of bigger fish to come!

Next on the agenda was a visit to a private farm just a bit out of town. This time round, Shane had sussed us out a bit more and made the start time 9am instead of 5am which made us very happy.

We arrived at the farm, then got taken on a 15 kilometer four wheel drive trip to a creek which ran through some of the best Aussie bush we’ve ever seen. It was a stunning little river which barely had enough water in it to flow, but had puddles and holes where the elusive Murray Cod live.

This was the fishing we’d been waiting for. Everybody caught a cod, not massive, but still rewarding and a great way to finish off the show. We caught them spinning with Spinnerbait lures, you’d make a dozen or so casts in a hole, if you didn’t catch anything you’d move on. It was a special, unfished bit of Dubbo that we were only able to fish thanks to Shane knowing the owners.

Our final day in Dubbo was almost our last day ever! We got attacked by a giraffe. The idea was to film an introduction to our Dubbo Adventure show at the famous zoo. We wanted exotic animals walking around in the back ground while we made the comment that this week on the program we were far, far away… We set it up with the zoo no problems and a keeper took us out in the African enclosure. Turns out Giraffes are massive animals with a mind of their own and they can kick every different direction. How we survived I don’t know – but we did and our journeys around Australia fishing continue on…

Hook, Line and Sinker goes to air on Southern Cross TEN in Qld, NSW and Vic and on Southern Cross TV in Darwin and Tasmania. It also airs on Central and on Spencer Gulf networks. Check out the show on the web at www.hooklinesinker.tv

Glad you like it Wendy and Danny. When we dropped in unannounced on the Astons, it was obvious from the word go they were deserving winners of the Triton! Wendy held back tears and Danny offered us coffee and biscuits – while we tried to shoot a segment for the show. It couldn’t have gone to a better home.” Nick and Andrew, Hook, Line and Sinker
