Low Head

At the mouth of the Tamar River, Low Head continues to produce enough fishing variety to make it into our Tasmanian Top 10. It’s one of the best places in the state to pick up a feed of delicious Southern Calamari squid, whether from a boat or off the Pilot Station jetty. In late summer Low Head usually sees a run of Yellowtail Kingfish hanging around the channel markers, this summer was one of the best in recent times. A short distance offshore (over 3 nautical miles) Low Head provides the chance to tangle with one of our most spectacular gamefish – the Mako Shark. Any encounter with a Mako is something you’ll not soon forget and the sight of a 150 kilo shark exploding 15 feet into the air is an angling experience of the highest order.

With thanks to the team at Hook, Line and Sinker.

Sound unreal. I am taking the family down in November. We are renting a Motor home and going from Launceston to Bridport and doing the top end to The Nut ant Stanley. From there we will travel to Cradle Mountain and back through Delaraine to Launceston. I will be doing as much fishing and golfing as I can. Do you know of any good spots across the top end of Tassie? Regards, Roger.
