Western NSW out back
July school holidays 2008 I had been trying to get out to wilandra NP and Lake Mungo for a couple of years and so this year i bit the bullet loaded myself and my daughter up and of we went. our first night up behind Orange was cold wet and horrible. the next day we slowly broke camp and headed for Parks to refuel and take on the last of supplies. As we left Orange the rain started and was constant right through to Parks. After doing some shopping and chatting to a local farmer at the petrol stop I thought it best to ring ahead to check on track conditions as it turned out that it had been rain right through the west. With the phone call I was told that Mungo was out of the question as all the tracks were close inside the park indefinatley, and all tracks to Wikandra NP were at that time closed but they were not sure how long for. So with that we boked into a hotel in Hillston the last village on the way out to Wilandra. The dirt road from Condobalin across to hillston went through Lake Congellico. This track started out in great condition but with in a matter of klm's turned to thick sticky mud. 2wd turned out to useless even with the heave mud tyres I had on. A short trip into the bush thanks to the camber of the road and slick mud and it was lock up front axle and 4wd high for next 120 plus klm's with a breif break on the tar as we past the lake. After a lovelly war night in the hotel room we woke with renewd enthusiasim only to find that conditions were worst and only road into Wilandra was open and for how long no one knew. After chewing it over for an hour or so I made the hard choice of cutting our trip short and having to return to sydney vowing to have another go at it next year.
