THE END IS NEAR

For varying reasons, what we thought would be a 12 month trip has finished up a little shorter. We have had 10 wonderful months of roaming with not too many cares & woes. It has been great but is fast nearing an end and, as we work our way back through SA and into Victoria on our way home, we reflect on what has been a wonderful experience. We have – Marvelled at landscapes which are flat, treeless, gorges and yet more gorges, termite mounds, Australian Grass...

WHALE WATCHING

2nd October Left Exmouth today and headed to Carnarvon, having spent a full week in this picturesque area. The town is full of holiday makers (lots of families as this was the first week of WA school holidays as well as backpackers) and, with the Ningaloo Reef being just off the coast, scuba diving and snorkelling are favourite pastimes here. By far the most fantastic experience during the week was a 4 hour whale watching tour which took us way off the coast for a wonderful day of ‘up close & personal encounters’ with literally hundreds of humpback whales. ...

CAPE YORK PENINSULA

11/05/09 TO 29/05/09 Well just having completed the Cape York section of our trip what can I say – fabulous, fantastic, great scenery, certainly one of the highlights of our trip so far and well worth it. After the first couple of times of packing & unpacking the car the process became second nature. Everything had its place and, as long as things were stowed where they belonged, everything fitted back into the car and life was easy and all fell into a pattern with each of us having an order of process to follow. It...

WA TO SA & VIC

8th October Arrived today in Kalbarri (also on the coast) having seen the much talked about and eagerly anticipated WA wildflowers today. The drive from the highway into Kalbarri through the Kalbarri National Park was colourful and amazing. We had been concerned that it may have been too late for us to see the wildflowers. While here it was out into the National Park to see yet more gorges and the natural rock formation called “Nature’s Window”. Unfortunately at this stage Rossco is all ‘gorged out’ and not really interested. Spent 12th to 16th October in...

30th July Left Darwin on the next leg of our trip – through Adelaide River which is full of WW2 history and onwards through Katherine & Victoria River to Kununurra. There are very strict quarantine regulations on taking fruit, vegies, honey, nuts & plants into WA. Just before Kununurra (at the crossing of the NT/WA border) all vehicles including caravans are inspected the Quarantine Station where we had heard of many people having to surrender all sorts of things. From Kununurra it was off in the car & tent again to travel part of the...

As you all probably know I hate writing at any time and can always find any excuse to do something else. However the last time I updated the website was early July and, as I was dragging the chain at that stage, and only did an update up to the end of our trip up the Cape. That seems so long ago – we have covered a lot of country since then and seen so much. So as Ross sits and watches the AFL grand final it is an opportune time to get back on track. 3rd June ...

TWO WEEKS IN CAIRNS

24/04/09 TO 10/05/09 Preparing for our trip up the Cape turned into us spending 2 weeks in Cairns. We decided to have a winch fitted to the front of the Patrol and this meant a new bull bar – so why not go the whole hog and have side rails fitted which also meant new running boards. The parts did not arrive when the should have, the Monday that David had booked the car in for the work to be done turned out to be a public holiday and in the end the work took 2 ½ days. We...

CLERMONT TO CAIRNS

6/4/09 This morning we left the dam behind along with Kenny & Wendy as we headed for Mackay. (Why do Queenslanders do things like this – it is not pronounced as it is spelt.) As we headed north east from Clermont the Peak Ranges dominate the landscape which is otherwise flat. We have again travelled through lots more coal mining areas today passing numerous mines. Of course we saw lots more coal trains. There didn’t seem to be a lot to do and see in Mackay – spent two days there having a look around. Still...

CATCHING RED CLAW.

29th March to 5th April. Our week at the dam was great although constant work with catching red claw which are like oversized yabbies and have a red claw, hence the name. There was no power in the park, but it is acceptable to run a generator between the hours of 7.00 am and 9.30pm. Good drinking water was available from a couple of rainwater tanks near the day visitor area. There were even hot showers (most enjoyable at the end of the day) and drop toilets. But mobile phone service is not available at the caravan...
