Lake Ballard and Mount Elvire are situated east of Menzies. Lake Ballard is renowned for its 51 cast iron statues spread out over the salt lake and is easily accessed by normal car. Mount Elvire is further west of Lake Ballard and can be almost driven up but requires a sturdy 4wd with good clearance an low range. It has a great view over WA's largest salt lake-Lake Barlee.

We completed this trip without incident over the Easter break in 2011. We covered a lot of ground but did it comfortably in the time.  The roads were in reasonable condition.  We used the guide book to give us more detailed information along the way, but those sites that needed an explanation were well signed. The scenery is constantly changing as you move through different areas. Suitable for all ages. As with any outback travelling, be aware of the weather conditions, past, present and expected.  Some of the roads travelled flood quickly with minimal rain, but...

Camped at the Rubicon River SItes.     Plenty of Photo Opportunities along the drive.     Thinking of Going up that way again soon. And next I will have to allow for more time. On our second day out we called into Cowel for some fresh oysters (they dont get any fresher than when they are still alive). By 4.00pm we had the caraven set up at the Tumby Bay caravan park and we were drinking champagne and shucking oysters. Tough but someone has to do it.   Touring around Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay is great with a couple of the highlights being a fishing charter (lots of good sized King George whiting...

We did not think we could get a better welcome – especially  after Ky Crow and Gill the camel carers had entertained us at their camel farm near Copi Hollow. I had a quick visit to the Stirling Ranges the other day. A place I am approaching almost 100 visits. I had a meeting not far away that day so decided to get a quick hike in before heading back to Perth. There a many peaks to climb and it is worth seeing it in Wild flower season which is quickly approaching. The Stirling ranges is special-not only for its peaks which climbers use for training, but also that it is one on the worlds bio diverse hotspots. Went up the Birdsville Track in the July school break. Crossed the Coopers on the ferry, stayed a few nights at Mungerannie, and did a quick dash up the track to Birdsville for lunch! Good running on the track and tarmac.
