Lake Ballard and Mount Elvire are situated east of Menzies. Lake Ballard is renowned for its 51 cast iron statues spread out over the salt lake and is easily accessed by normal car. Mount Elvire is further west of Lake Ballard and can be almost driven up but requires a sturdy 4wd with good clearance an low range. It has a great view over WA's largest salt lake-Lake Barlee.

I had a quick visit to the Stirling Ranges the other day. A place I am approaching almost 100 visits. I had a meeting not far away that day so decided to get a quick hike in before heading back to Perth. There a many peaks to climb and it is worth seeing it in Wild flower season which is quickly approaching. The Stirling ranges is special-not only for its peaks which climbers use for training, but also that it is one on the worlds bio diverse hotspots. Whilst you dont need a 4wdrive to get there I thought...

Big 4 Soldiers Point is another fanstatic family break. My girls are 5yr and 3yrs old and they loved thios place as did we. They are currently building an indoor heated pool ...cant wait. What I really liked was the bowling club next door. Wlaking to dinner is way better than driving....a few beverages with dinner and an easy 300m home.

The wind was very cold but the day 21 deg C. 14 and 15/7 at Maroochydore to see Doreen's sister. 16/7 arrived at Hervey Bay, QLD to spend a couple of days sight seeing. 17th at 1770 was extremely difficult to find a vacancy at a Caravan Park. Stayed out of town near an industrial area. The park was dodgy however the people were great, We had our first happy hour...

When we got there we took a cab to pick-up our Mitsubishi Outlander for the weekend. I work with Mitsubishi so they very kindly let me borrow an Outlander for the trip. Island beach run without the expense of barge fees. Bridge access to island, pick up beach permit from Bongaree Caravan Park & off you go. There's a couple of minor water crossings on the beach- watch them after heavy rain though as these can become deep and catch you off guard. War ruins at the northern end (don't forget the insect repellant) & inland track back to Welsby (closed during periods of heavy rain).
