The Dawson River is one of the main tributaries of the mighty Fitzroy River system of Central Queensland. Rising on the central Downs north of Injune close to the well known Carnarvon Gorge National Park, it is commonly crossed by many tourists, but rarely it seems fished. As it winds eastward, the Dawson crosses the Leichardt Highway at Taroom and again at Theodore skirting the Precipice National Park along the way as its path takes a more northerly route. I am very happy with the Pajero. Since upgrading the suspension, the extra height gained has made offroading so much better. The Aux fuel tank means I don't have to look for fuel stations on my travels as often. I am still learning about the PJ. On my recent trip to Esperance I found that when head lights are turned on for country driving you can't see the GPS. Also when offroad and Stibility control is turned off, it turns itself back on after stoping or going through the 4WD gears. Need to to keep checking, have'nt quite worked it...

Lake Ballard and Mount Elvire are situated east of Menzies. Lake Ballard is renowned for its 51 cast iron statues spread out over the salt lake and is easily accessed by normal car. Mount Elvire is further west of Lake Ballard and can be almost driven up but requires a sturdy 4wd with good clearance an low range. It has a great view over WA's largest salt lake-Lake Barlee.

The scenery is constantly changing as you move through different areas. Suitable for all ages. As with any outback travelling, be aware of the weather conditions, past, present and expected.  Some of the roads travelled flood quickly with minimal rain, but...

In my 1995 NJ Pajero 3.0L Manual.     Loved the driving from Woods Point to Walhalla. It was a great Family Trip and Fun for the Kids. Camped at the Rubicon River SItes.     Plenty of Photo Opportunities along the drive.     Thinking of Going up that way again soon. And next I will have to allow for more time. I also need to read more about the Area and more on Camping Grounds.     Does anyone recommend a good "Camping" book for Victoria that includes also details...

Difficulty Rating: Easy Requirements: air compressor and gauge Access: Entry to Yuraygir Nation Park requires a National Parks Pass for your entire stay. There are a limited number of opportunities for beach driving in Australia. For this very reason, the thought of driving along a beach in this beautiful country is almost irresistible for any 4WD enthusiast. Lucky for us, there is the spectacular Yuraygir National Park located 30km east of Grafton in New South Wales. Here 4WD enthusiasts can cruise along the beach and find one of the seven picturesque camp grounds available to visitors....
