The Daintree Rainforest

The heritage listed 'Daintree Rainforest' encompasses an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometres, from the Daintree River to Cooktown, to the Great Divide, it represents the single largest block of tropical rainforest in Australia.

One of the reasons it is so special is because of the sheer number and abundant diversity of flora that inhabit it; it truly is one of the most complex ecosystems on the planet.

Many many years ago, Australia had numerous forests of this nature spread across the land, some say they even surrounded places like Uluru, growing right up to the famous landmark. For anyone that has travelled to the dry red dessert that surrounds this Australian cultural icon, they would probably be shocked to learn this. But it is only through climate change that Australia’s once abundant rainforests have diminished, with the luscious Daintree one of the last remaining examples.

The landscape itself is one of striking diversity. It includes “magnificent scenery, mountain ranges, fast flowing streams and waterfalls, deep gorges and dense rainforest” (daintree-rec.com.au).

The best time to visit this stunning region is through Winter, which is the dry season. To get the most out of the trip, most include a visit to Cape Tribulation, well and truly worth the effort!
With thanks to Tourism Queensland.
